![]() There are many positive reasons to buy second hand furniture, many obvious reasons such as reducing waste and saving money. There is however one reason that many don’t think about. Furniture now a days is built differently, there is more mass production and quality in the meantime has been sacrificed. That is why you constantly hear people say, “They sure don’t make things like they used to anymore”. And yes quality is another really good reason to buy used furniture, however that is not the reason I’m talking about. I am talking about health. Yes, that’s right! It is healthier to buy second hand furniture than new. New furniture, especially cheap furniture today is made of particle board or pressed wood which is usually held together by formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and it is a respiratory, eye and throat irritant. Besides known for causing cancer it has also been linked with increased risk of asthma and allergies, especially in kids. When you purchase new furniture made out of particle board or pressed wood, this furniture off sets gases around your home. The best way to avoid formaldehyde is to buy furniture that has stood the test of time or at the very least has had time to off set all those gases before you take them to your home. Buying solid wood is always a great alternative, not only is it better quality and more durable, but it is also less likely to off set harmful particles and gases around your home.
